The Armstrong Whitworth Albemarle was originally designed as a medium bomber for the Royal Air Force in World War 2. However in service it was inferior to other aircraft designed for this role so the Albemarle was used for special operations including paratroop dropping and glider towing participating in the Invasion of Sicily, D-Day and Operation Market Garden. A total of 602 aircraft were delivered.
